A 23-year-old Virgin Atlantic aircraft engineer has tragically died following an accident while carrying out maintenance on a Boeing 787 at Heathrow Airport.
Georgie Buxton was reportedly conducting maintenance tests inside one of the aircraft's fuel tanks when equipment is believed to have collapsed, causing fatal injuries.
The aircraft involved has been grounded while a full investigation takes place. Virgin Atlantic is working alongside the relevant authorities and Boeing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. At this stage, the exact cause of the accident remains unknown.
Georgie joined Virgin Atlantic as an aircraft technician two years ago and was described by colleagues as a much-loved member of the engineering team.
In a statement, Virgin Atlantic said:
"We are heartbroken to confirm that a much-loved member of our engineering team has passed away.
Our thoughts are firmly with Georgie's family, loved ones, friends and colleagues at this incredibly sad and challenging time.
We're providing support to loved ones wherever we can and sharing our heartfelt condolences to everyone affected. Georgie's family has asked for privacy at this very difficult time.
The safety and wellbeing of our people is always our top priority, and we are devastated by this incident.
We are working closely with the relevant authorities and the aircraft manufacturer on the investigation to establish all the facts.
Out of respect for those involved, and while the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide any further information at this stage."
Heathrow Airport also expressed its condolences, saying:
"We were very sorry to hear of this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with Georgie's family and friends, as well as all of our colleagues in the wider Virgin Atlantic family who feel this loss."
As the investigation continues, the aviation community mourns the loss of a young engineer whose career had only just begun.
